How does an author publish an Open Access article?

It is important to request Open Access when submitting the article.

Article submission:
Manuscripts are submitted directly via the online editorial system of the selected journal (ScholarOne). Authors must:

  • have a current ScholarOne account
  • use their institutional email address. Without this, BMJ will be unable to verify the author's eligibility.

The CC licence is selected at the submission stage. Please note that BMJ only offers the CC BY-NC licence. Authors requiring a CC BY license for grant purposes must contact the publisher's editorial team.

After the article has been accepted for publication:
The publisher will then review and approve the OA request under the transformative agreement (approval is automatic).
